Literacy Alive! is Kappa Delta Pi's signature service initiative that invites members to create programs and events in their communities that bring empowering literacy skills to their participants.
Annually across the globe, chapter and professional members host literacy-related events that promote and strengthen literacy skills and enrich lives. Literacy Alive! events reach out to an average of 24,000 children, adolescents, and adults each year. Programs range from one-day events to semester-long partnerships with schools.
Kappa Eta is an active participate in the Literacy Alive! initiative. Partnering with Jumpstart, a national early literacy non-profit organization, Kappa Eta participates in literacy-based events in the community schools.
Every year, Kappa Eta joins Jumpstart in "Read For The Record," where KDP members read the selected book to local school children. Kappa Eta has also teamed up with Jumpstart to bring Dr. Seuss to life for young children for Dr. Seuss' Birthday, which featured a read-aloud puppet show and Dr. Seuss craft activities.
Autism Speaks is the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.
Every year, Kappa Eta participates in Walk Now for Autism Speaks, which raises funds and awareness for Autism Speaks. After years of involvement, Kappa Eta decided it was time to take an even greater role in the fight against Autism.
In 2011, Kappa Eta worked with St. John's University Student Affairs to bring Light It Up Blue to the Queens campus. The Second Annual Light It Up Blue campaign was launched by Autism Speaks for World Autism Awareness Day.
